Path of Exile 2 Best Class Full 2026 Tier List & Guide

Choosing your class in Path of Exile 2

Picking a class in Path of Exile 2 feels like standing at a fork with eight paths, and no clear signpost. Some players spend more time reading forums than actually playing the campaign. That’s the wrong way round, so let’s fix it.

This guide breaks down which class is genuinely strongest right now, why the “best” answer depends on what you enjoy, and how the current patch has reshuffled the rankings. No filler, no recycled 2024 tier lists copy-pasted with a new date slapped on top.

What’s the Best Class in Path of Exile 2 Right Now?

As of the current Runes of Aldur (0.5.4b) patch, community voting ranks Monk and Huntress as the top S-tier picks in Path of Exile 2. Monk’s Invoker ascendancy remains a favorite for overall power, while Huntress gained a lot of ground after the 0.5 “Return of the Ancients” update added the Spirit Walker ascendancy. That said, Ranger and Warrior are still excellent, more forgiving choices for anyone newer to the game.

There is no single “best class” that works for every player. There’s a best class for your playstyle, your patience level, and how much time you’re willing to spend gearing.

How This Tier List Was Built

Before jumping into rankings, it helps to know what actually separates a strong class from a weak one in PoE2:

  • Clear speed — how fast you wipe out packs of enemies while mapping
  • Boss damage — single-target burst against tough endgame fights
  • Survivability — how forgiving the class is when you make mistakes
  • Gearing difficulty — how much currency and crafting you need before the build “clicks”
  • Ascendancy depth — how many strong ascendancy options the class has access to

A class can be S-tier on paper and still feel miserable to play if it doesn’t match your instincts. Keep that in mind as you read.

Path of Exile 2 Classes: Current Overview

path of exile 2 best class

Path of Exile 2 currently has 8 playable classes in early access, with a total of 12 planned at full release. Each class isn’t locked into one weapon or skill type in PoE2, any class can technically use any skill gem but your starting stats and ascendancy options still shape what you’re naturally good at.

The Current S-Tier: Monk and Huntress

Monk

Monk earns its S-tier spot through sheer flexibility. It blends elemental quarterstaff strikes with martial arts mobility, letting you dash in, deal damage, and retreat before enemies can punish you. The Invoker ascendancy is the go-to pick for players who want raw power, while the newer Martial Artist ascendancy, added in patch 0.5, leans into unarmed combat and summons illusory bells and combat clones for added utility.

Monk does ask more of the player than a class like Warrior. Positioning and timing matter, so it rewards experience more than it forgives mistakes.

Huntress

Huntress jumped in popularity after the Spirit Walker ascendancy launched. This ascendancy channels the spirits of a Stag, Owl, and Bear, giving Huntress access to buffs and utility that older ascendancies didn’t have. Combined with the spear’s natural mix of melee reach and thrown attacks, Huntress now covers both damage and mobility better than most classes in the game.

If you liked the idea of a hybrid melee/ranged fighter but found Huntress underwhelming a year ago, it’s worth another look.

A-Tier: Reliable, Beginner-Friendly Options

Ranger

Ranger has been a fan favorite since launch, and for good reason. It’s a straightforward bow class: stand at range, shoot things, avoid getting hit. The learning curve is gentle, and the payoff scales well into the endgame with the Deadeye and Pathfinder ascendancies. If you want a class that just makes sense the first time you play it, Ranger is a safe bet.

Warrior

Warrior is still the class most guides recommend for a first character, and that recommendation holds up. It’s tanky, it hits hard with maces and slams, and it doesn’t punish you for standing in the wrong spot the way a squishier class would. The trade-off is that Warrior can feel slower to clear maps compared to Ranger or Monk.

Sorceress

Sorceress remains one of the hardest-hitting spellcasters in the game, particularly with Stormweaver builds that scale lightning damage into massive boss-killing bursts. The catch is that Sorceress has a lower survivability ceiling early on energy shield builds can feel fragile until you’ve invested serious currency into gear.

B-Tier: Underrated but Slower

Witch

Witch tends to sit lower in community tier lists, and honestly, that undersells it a bit. The energy shield and minion synergy make it one of the most forgiving classes for players who make positioning mistakes your minions absorb a lot of pressure that would otherwise kill a squishier class. The trade-off is map clear speed, which noticeably lags behind Ranger or Monk at similar gear levels. If you enjoy sustained fights over fast clears, Witch (especially Infernalist) rewards patience.

Mercenary

Mercenary occupies an odd spot. It plays similarly to Ranger but trades the bow for a crossbow and gains access to grenades for area damage. On paper that sounds like an upgrade, but reload speed has historically held the class back, and several of its strengths overlap with what Sorceress or Warrior already do better. It’s not a bad class — just one that struggles to carve out a clear identity.

Which Class Should You Actually Pick?

If you’re brand new to Path of Exile 2, go with Warrior or Ranger. Both are simple to understand, hard to mess up, and give you room to learn the game’s systems — the passive tree, crafting, and boss mechanics without also fighting a difficult class.

If you’ve played an ARPG before and want more depth right away, Monk or Huntress reward the extra effort with genuinely strong endgame performance.

If you specifically want a class that forgives sloppy play, Witch minion builds are worth considering even though they clear maps more slowly.

Important Caveat: Balance Changes Constantly

Path of Exile 2 is still in early access, and GGG (the developer) patches class balance regularly. A class sitting in B-tier today can move up two tiers after a single update — that’s exactly what happened to Huntress with patch 0.5. Treat any tier list, including this one, as a snapshot of the current patch rather than a permanent ranking. Always check in-game patch notes before committing serious currency to a build.

Conclusion

There’s no universally “best” class in Path of Exile 2 there’s a best class for how you like to play. Right now, Monk and Huntress lead the community-voted tier lists thanks to strong ascendancies and flexible playstyles, while Ranger and Warrior remain the most reliable choices for players who want a smoother learning curve. Whatever you pick, remember that PoE2’s skill gem system means you’re never fully locked in you can experiment, respec, and find your own build long after your starting choice.
